Mocp skips through songs quickly after closing frontend and then reopening

I'm having a strange issue that I can easily recreate, but have found no documentation about. When listening to music, and then closing the mocp player (using q) and restarting it (using mocp) when I try to play the next song, or change playlists, or select any music, instead of playing the song normally mocp scrolls through the song very quickly (seemingly at 30s at a time) and then does the same thing on the next one. Occassionally it'll stop and then begin playing a song in the middle, but anytime I try to go to the next song the process starts over.

I think this has got to be the strangest bug ever reported on MOC. I've performed many variations on this sequence hundreds of times in testing but never experienced this.

The only thing I can think of is that your keyboard is generating phantom keypresses (possibly special keys being mapped by termcap to sequences including '[' and ']' characters), but it's not a very convincing explanation. Is there anything unusual about your keyboard?

What happens if you start mocp playing and quit the client ('q') then try moving to the next song using the command line ('mocp -f')?

It's very strange to me as well since I've been using mocp for about 3 years and on several computers and this is the first time I've had this issue. It's worth noting that I also tried downgrading and there was no difference. I thought perhaps PulseAudio was the issue, but it only happens in mocp. One thing to mention is the problem goes away when I reboot (that is until i do it again >.<) Just now I tried closing and restarting and OF COURSE everything is working as it should since I decided to do a bug report. I'll try again tonight after doing a suspend/resume to see if it has any effect.

My keyboard isn't especially unusual, it's a CM Quickfire Rapid with blue switches, attached to a laptop. I hadn't considered phantom key presses. Perhaps when this happens again I'll try disconnecting it and using the laptop keyboard.

I tend not to think of things I don't personally use, and I did think of ALSA but couldn't see how it could do this (short of some sound card clocking problem). I didn't think of PulseAudio.

However, if I understand you correctly when you say "the problem goes away when I reboot" then it persists across invocations of the MOC server in the absence of the aforementioned reboot. *That* implies it's external to MOC but possibly triggered by it.

When you say "it only happens in mocp", does that mean that if you trigger the problem using MOC then quit MOC altogether ('Q') and start another player the problem does not appear?

Another thing to try would be to remove PulseAudio and go straight to ALSA (or OSS, if that's what you're using) to see if the problem disappears. That would implicate PulseAudio; it might be worth checking the PulseAudio forums for any similar problem. (MOC does not yet support PulseAudio directly but will in version 2.6 with contributed code.)

If the problem does persist with ALSA then try to capture the audio as described in the config.example file section "ALSA output settings". If you listen back to that and there's no skipping, then the problem is with ALSA.

Of course, the obvious question to ask is: what changed immediately prior to the problem emerging? What we have so far strongly implies the problem is external to MOC.

So, when I quit moc and then open the same files in vlc, the problem does not exist. Interestingly, I just tested while VLC was playing, and the sound coming from moc is actually sounding like static. I uninstalled PulseAudio (but did not reboot, as rebooting solves the issue entirely and would not be good for debugging purposes) and I get this error when starting moc: Trying ALSA...
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave

However, I'm able to start VLC and play songs without an issue. I reinstalled pulseaudio & pulseaudio-alsa, and mocp starts but the problem persists.

I've been thinking about what could possibly cause this over the past month, but I did not come up with any ideas. I didn't even come up with any ideas of where to start looking.

Trying and reporting back on some of the questions I asked above might suggest something. Also, if you could run mocp with the -D option and send mocmaint the mocp_server_log file (by e-mail if it compresses to less than 150KiB but via some cyberlocker if it's larger than that) then I can see if there're any clues in that.

Is this post at all relevant to your problem?

My gut instinct is that this is not a MOC problem. Nothing further has been heard from "bin_bash" either here or in response to e-mails so I suspect he's found the source of the problem by himself. As this is the sort of problem on which investigations cannot proceed without the assistance of the user in distress, I'm closing it.

Okay, this just started happening while a song was playing. I have no idea what could be causing this. I'm going to uninstall pulseaudio completely and see if that helps.

I was going to suggest that you try turning off PulseAudio altogether and restarting ALSA then seeing if you could recreate it, but you've now arrived at that yourself. I still can't see any reason why bouncing the client would trigger it though, and your latest discovery suggests it may be a red herring (though a fairly consistant one).

Do let us know what happens with vanilla ALSA because I have a couple of ideas on how to proceed from there.

I really hate to do this mostly because I need to use pulse for things (i need skype/google voice at work and doesnt work without pulse, and for playing sound via hdmi). i'm kind of at the point where this weekend i'll try uninstalling pulse and see if it solves it, but even if it does it's not really a solution

You don't need to uninstall PulseAudio, just turn it off for the purposes of testing. Depending on which type of system initialisation scripts your particular distribution uses: /etc/rc.d/rc.pulseaudio stop or /etc/init.d/pulseaudio.sh stop (or similarly named scripts). If PulseAudio is found to be the cause, then you can set just MOC up to go straight to ALSA and later try the contributed MOC PulseAudio Sound Driver when it's added in 2.6 and see if that helps.
