Stable: 2.5.2
Development: 2.6-alpha3
I greatly enjoy listening to music on console - or even without console, as I have set up a number of keyboard shortcuts to toggle pause, start the playback, and stop the server completely (as I don't want mocp taking up resources when I'm not using it). Only downside is that I need two calls to mocp when starting playback/server.
I'd really like mocp -p start the server if it doesn't yet run. Even better, have a modified -G switch that will startup the server and start playing if the server doesn't yet run and toggle play/pause otherwise.

Scripting?
The functionality to do such things will be progressively introduced in MOC versions 2.6 through 2.8. In the meantime, can you not attach a BASH/Perl/Python script to the shortcut keys and do what you want there?
