To be clear, the key is "L" pressed with no modifier (with Shift, the default action is to display lyrics). It is used to change layouts, out of which you can have 3.
To make MOC remember the view with just a directory, put this line to your config:
Layout1 = "directory:0,0,100%,100%"
Now you have only one layout. By pressing TAB, which is normally used to hide the playlist temporarily, you alter between a full-page directory view and a playlist view.
